Bucket List

My friend Seth is going to the World Series. He’s ecstatic. He called yesterday to talk business, but what he really wanted to tell me was that he was going to watch his team, the Kansas City Royals, from right field of his home stadium. He really couldn’t believe it was happening to him. Going to any World Series, he said, was on his sports bucket list. Not his general list. His sports bucket list. I didn’t know you could have niche lists in the bucket list department, but there you go.

The Burren

Which got me thinking. Hmm… I don’t have a general bucket list, let alone niche lists broken down into categories. I keep lists about what I want my life to look like, for sure, but had never actually titled one a bucket list, the list of things to do before I die. Lots of folks talk about bucket lists, but, for some reason, I’ve resisted the urge … until now. So, here goes.

  • Walk the red carpet in Hollywood: Yes. Did that one. I wrote a screenplay for a short film called Tacklebox some years ago. The film screened at a film festival at the Egyptian Theater on Hollywood Blvd. I walked down the red carpet, was interviewed for television, and yes, there were paparazzi.
  • Write a book: Did that one, too, earlier this year. How to Live Your Passion & Fulfill Your Dreams is out there in the universe, and on Amazon, spreading its positive message to all who turn its pages. I am truly proud of that accomplishment.
  • Travel to Ireland: Not yet. I’ve always felt the pull of the Emerald Isle. I want to dance a jig in a pub, kiss the Blarney Stone, tour the Guinness factory in Dublin, play hopscotch on the craggy rocks of the Burren, and hear my footsteps echo on the well-worn cobblestone streets of my ancestors. Now that I live in the Pacific Northwest, where the weather is pretty much the same, the urgency is not as immediate.  Which leads me to …
  •  Sip a fruity drink with an umbrella sticking out of it on a beach in Hawaii: My friend, Tracy, and I did this earlier this year, too. She took me as her guest, we had a blast, and I will be forever grateful. I would like to expand on this item to say that I want to luxuriate on that beach for a week beside my husband. We’ll do it soon, I promise.
  • Experience motherhood: Though I’ve not given birth, I’m stepmother to my husband’s delightful daughters. Our oldest, Kimry, lives with us and I have the privilege of being in her life on a daily basis. What a gift.
  • Be fabulously wealthy: Come on, you do, too, right? I want to own my own airplane so that I can send it to pick up my family and friends from around the country to visit me at any time. I want to live in abundance and share it with those close to me.
  • Climb a rock wall: I’ve not yet attempted, this and I know I’m nowhere near the shape I’ll need to be in to do it well. Yet. Still, every time I see that two-story climbing wall in the window of the REI store in downtown Seattle, I feel inspired rather than intimidated. That’s got to mean something.

And that’s it. That’s the list, as far as I can take it today. Perhaps tomorrow or the next day, there’ll be other items.

Do you have a bucket list? If so, what’s on it? What have you done so far? What’s left to experience? Please share your thoughts, and share this blog. I think it will be fun to read what goals and aspirations you dream about. Life’s short, baby. Let’s make it really worthwhile. Make a list.
