Issues of water management, budgets, and government restrictions universal on both sides of the border discussed at Western Washington Golf Course Superintendents Association meeting
BURLINGTON, WA (March 19, 2013)
Stacie Zinn Roberts, a nationally recognized writer and marketing expert in the golf course management industry, and president of Mount Vernon-based What’s Your Avocado?, recently moderated a panel of golf course superintendents and turf researchers from both the U.S. and Canada during the recent spring meeting of the Western Washington Golf Course Association.
The panel, held at Skagit Golf & Country Club in Burlington, WA, discussed issues that affect the golf course industry on both sides of the border. The members of the panel agreed that golf course superintendents are being asked to do more with less funding. One strategy that emerged was to create larger natural areas that need not be as intensively managed. Two golf course superintendents, Jacob Close of Sudden Valley Golf & Country Club in Bellingham, WA, and Brian Youell of Uplands Golf Club in Victoria, BC, noted that they had been able to create a more environmentally, sustainable landscape by expanding natural areas with the added bonus of saving money on labor, fertilizer and water for irrigation.
Also on the panel were: Steve Link, superintendent at Skagit Golf & Country Club in Burlington, WA; Stan Kazymerchyck, turfgrass management instructor at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Langley, BC; and Dr. Alec Kowalewski, assistant professor at Oregon State University in Corvallis, OR.
Other issues discussed were challenges associated with government restrictions on water use for irrigation, efforts to use less pesticide through Integrated Pest Management Programs, and turf choices for the Pacific Northwest.
